Tokyo 2020: Olympic marathon and race walks moved to Sapporo over heat fears

The race and marathon walking at summers Tokyo Olympics have now been transferred to Sapporo – 800km to the north because of its cooler states.
This summer, measures to fight the heat in the capital, such as water sprays and better shade, are trialled at test events.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athlete welfare wasat the core of modifications.
Sapporo can be up to six degrees cooler than Tokyo in peak summer.
International Association of Athletics Federations president Lord Coe said:Giving athletes the best platform for their performances inside the environment theyre in is fundamental to all significant events, and we will work together with the organisers to make the best marathon and race wander courses for the next years Olympic Games.
